Pairs Trading -- Two's Company

As relative trading ideas and strategies gain greater prominence, three brokers have added specific Pairs trading strategies to their existing algorithmic and DMA execution capabilities for clients via RealTick.

Barclays Capital - LMX Pairs

Pairs Trader, from Barclays Capital, automatically executes paired buy and sell orders in relative value trades. The user can specify the deal terms, target spread and execution method of the trade. The strategy monitors market spreads in real time and triggers a pair order when the current spread is within the target range specified.

Jefferies & Co

Jefferies has introduced three Pairs algorithms on RealTick. These algorithms allow traders to simultaneously execute in two securities, targeting a pre-defined set of conditions, such as a spread between the two stock prices, a ratio between the two prices, or their relative performance vs a benchmark (eg. the previous closing price)

The three Pairs algorithms available are:
  • Stat Arb - for ratio/spread trading
  • Risk Arb - for mergers and acquisition deals
  • Net Return - based on the relative performance of two stocks

Nomura - ModelExTM Pairs

As part of the ModelExTM suite of algorithms Nomura offer two specialist pairs trading strategies for European markets and will soon add a portfolio trading algorithm. Nomura’s suite provides a strategy designed to trade on pairs motivated by merger and acquisition deals (relative value trades), plus a strategy for trading single or multiple pairs, enhancing performance based on a specified price ratio target. Both these strategies are able to support equity-equity, equity-future, and future-future pairs. With the addition of Nomura’s Portfolio Strike strategy users will also have the ability to limit implementation shortfall, relative to arrival time, of a basket of stocks and index futures.

The Ultimate FIX - Use ATDL

In the last issue we highlighted RealTick’s industry leadership in the development and adoption of FIX ATDL (Algorithmic Trading Definition Language). In a year that has seen significant volatility, plus changes to market structure and liquidity posing new execution challenges, the increasing dilemma is how brokers efficiently manage the deployment of their algorithmic enhancements in a timely manner - potentially within hours, rather than months.
  • RealTick now has several brokers on its FIXATDL program, with additional tools that enable them to put their latest algos in the hands of their RealTick clients with the click of a button
  • As a trader you benefit from seeing enhancements and the latest algorithms appear seamlessly and consistently in RealTick

New RealTick API for Market Data and Trading released

Due to an increasing and wider demand for high quality market data and automated order flow from third party or proprietary applications, RealTick released a significantly enhanced API in October. A growing segment of traders are seeking to leverage automated analytics to assist their trading decisions and execution.

QuickStart, a robust Windows application, provides programmers and traders with a framework to easily access the programming fields and functions within the RealTick API -- reducing implementation complexity, cost and time.

Using an API to capitalize on trading ideas and strategies has never been easier, enhancing trading opportunities in conjunction with RealTick EMS to route and manage orders to multiple brokers, algorithms and liquidity pools. For more information click here.

Options Markets - Streamlining Symbology

Starting in February 2010 a number of significant changes come into force in the options world for participants trading, reporting and managing options.

These major changes relating to symbology, how the instrument is commonly designated, are:
  • A move away from OPRA’s (Options Price Reporting Authority) code to defining an option based on multiple fields - the option symbol, maturity, day, call/put indicator and strike price
  • All equity strikes, currently in fractions, will be decimalized
Throughout 2009 RealTick has been actively working and testing with the industry and key partners to ensure a seamless transition and full support of the new symbology for clients.

You can view industry background and detail at theocc.com.

RealTick is recognized as top employer

Finally - at the end of a challenging year for everyone involved in the financial markets, we appreciate and value your business. RealTick would like to thank all its partners and clients for their support throughout the year and we look forward to working with you in 2010.

Season’s Greetings and Best Wishes for 2010
